. "People have been very supportive of what I've done and I feel real good about what we've accomplished."
It was Leppert's first public acknowledgment that he's pondering leaving the mayor's office to run for Senate.
As he pointed out Friday, he would have the chance to run if Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison resigned her seat to focus solely on running for governor. Hutchison is in a tough primary campaign against incumbent Rick Perry. She was expected to resign by year's end, but the debate over health insurance reform and other factors have kept her in Washington.
But Leppert, a Republican, recognizes that there could be an opening.
During the interview, I told him Senate seat don't often come open.
"Opportunities and obstacles come up," he said. "When they come up, you deal with them."
If the seat comes open and Leppert does run, he would have to resign as Dallas mayor. He's in the middle of his first term.
Leppert would be an underdog in a special election for Senate. He's had a late start and needs to build name recognition.
Republican contenders include Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, former Secretary of State Roger Williams, Railroad Commission Chairman Michael Williams, State Sen. Florence Shapiro, Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones.
The two major Democrats in the race are former Texas Comptroller John Sharp and Houston Mayor Bill White.
You can watch
I knew it! I knew it! Leppert is an opportunist! What about the Trinity River Project Mr. Leppert? That's pretty tacky of you to not even complete one term! Even Ro Kirk completed 1 1/2 terms before he tried to go to the senate.
This should be interesting! Let's see what the african american preachers like Freddy Haynes, Rickie Rush, Sheron Patterson and the rest of the preachers that supported Leppert do. Will they support Leppert the republican or will they support a democrat like Bill White or John Sharp?
Who will our next mayor be? Will Dwaine Caraway resign and run? Will Angela Hunt run? Will Ron Natinsky run? Will Vonceil Hill run. Will Dave Neuman run? I bet at least three on this list will run. This will create openings on the council for new candidates.
