Hill, who is the deputy commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia, is scheduled to start work on Dec. 1. She was selected unanimously by the board on Oct. 30, making her the first female chancellor in Alabama and now the highest paid.
She will also be eligible for a $15,000-a-year performance bonus to be negotiated with the board.
David Byers Jr. of Birmingham, who headed a three-member board committee that recommended the benefits, said Hill "is very excited about coming."
Hill's benefits are higher than former chancellor Bradley Byrne, who resigned earlier this year to run for the Republican nomination for governor. Byrne earned $248,500, plus $20,000 in deferred compensation.
The board approved Hill's compensation package on a 6-0 vote.
Byers said in evaluating salaries around the South, they ranged from the upper $160,000s in Mississippi to the low $600,000s in Kentucky. The national median was in the $260,000 range.
He said the committee, which also included Dr. Mary Jane Caylor of Huntsville and Betty Peters of Dothan, concluded that Hill deserved a higher salary because she would have the "additional level of stress of working for an elected board."
